JoyceDeWitt first performed on stage when she was 13. When she was 13, Dewitt began appearing on the stage. She graduated with an undergraduate degree from Ball State University. During her summer stock performance she was encouraged by the director to attend UCLA's Department of Theater MFA Program. She was granted the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship as well as the Clifton Webb Scholarship. Dewitt said that she had not met Abe Vigoda during her time at UCLA. DeWitt is well-known for her role as Janet Wood during the 1977-1984 run of sitcom Three's Company, a job she was offered after being cast in the second pilot episode of the show. DeWitt also appeared as Janet in an episode in 1979 of the spinoff show The Ropers. Following the show's conclusion, Three's Company ended in 1984, DeWitt appeared in an episode of Finder of Lost Loves in 1984 following which she resigned from acting for a number of years. Acting was her first return on stage in the month of June in 1991 when she was a performer on an episode of the Noises Off production in Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. In the following year, she appeared in the 1995 TV comedy film Spring Fling! Pinky and the Brain aired in 1997, and featured characters based on her. It was voiced partially by another actress. She was in the episode Cybill. Her 2000s work includes TV shows such as Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special and Call of the Wild.
