While many people believe that Khan was named Chaka as she became a member of the Panthers however, she claims that she was named by the Yoruba Baba gave her the name Chaka Adunne Aduffe Karifi when she was the age of 13. She quit the Panthers in 1969 and resigned from high school following her time at Calumet High School, and Kenwood High School. (Now Kenwood Academy). She began to perform in smaller groups throughout the Chicago area first performing with Cash McCall's group Lyfe with her former boyfriend Hassan Khan. Chaka and Hassan were married in the year 1971.
